What is National Vietnam War Veterans Day?
In 2017, former President Trump signed The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act (of 2017) establishing every March 29th to be celebrated as National Vietnam War Veterans Day as "a way to thank and honor our nation's Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice."
...and Why?
Many of our loved ones who served in the War 50+ years ago are often forgotten about and have failed to receive the praise and adoration like some of the other wars that have been fought on the American behalf. The Vietnam War was a hugely unpopular War in the American public. But make no mistake about it - these Veterans deserve every bit of thanks and praise for answering the call of duty to their country.
National Vietnam War Veterans Day honors the 9+million Veterans that served in the American Armed Forces during the time frame November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 including the 304K that were wounded, 1,253 MIA, 2,500 POWs, and of course, the 58K that gave the Ultimate Sacrifice.
How we Honored Our Vietnam Veteran
Lights on ROC
On March 29th, 2021, if you looked up to the skies in City of Rochester (NY), you were able to see the downtown building lights lit up in Red, Green, and Gold, the colors of the Vietnam Service Medal bestowed upon all who served in the Vietnam War.
I want to thank Amy Olds of Buckingham Properties and all the participating building managers for giving us the opportunity to Lights on ROC tonight and honor the Vietnam Veterans of Rochester. If you have any special requests for colors (i.e., birthdays, graduations, etc.) that you would like to Light Up ROC downtown, put your request in the calendar on the website.
Vietnam War Commemoration Lapel Pin
Honor your veteran by commemorating their service with the Official Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin. The pin is FREE to all who request it via the website or by email and provides "a lasting memento of our Nation's Thanks!"
Dessert Time
Lastly, never forget that spending time with your veteran is the most important thing we can do to show our support and love for their sacrifice and service. For our 2021 celebration, Stefanie and I had my mom and dad over for dinner and dessert, and the dessert was, of course, appropriately theme colored.
